The Authority's primary mission is the overall official control of the safety and quality of food including water, beverages and animal feed, along the food chain from production up to its supply to the final consumer. Part III Section 15 of the Food Safety and Quality Act 2011, enjoins the Food Control Advisory Committee to advise government on the preparation of primary and secondary legislations relating to food and feed. Section 59d of the same Act empowers the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia to make regulations requiring, prohibiting or regulating the presence in food or feed of any specified substance or any substance of any specified class and generally for regulating the composition of food and feed. All Food Business Operators shall comply with the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2011 and all regulation made under it.

Food Safety and Quality Authority of The Gambia is established by the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2011 under the Office of The President. It is the sole National Competent Authority with powers of delegation mandated to officially control the safety and quality of all foods (including water and beverages) and animal feed whether locally produced, imported or destined for export.
