Our Directorates

The Authority has a culture of recruiting competent persons with expertise in disciplines such as Food Science and Engineering, Food Safety and Quality Management, Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Public Health, Law etc. and ensure continuous capacity building of the competent persons. The Authority has three (3) Technical Directorates under which the competent staff work, they include:

Food Control Directorate

Is responsible for all inspection and certification, and audit related activities to ensure the production, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, retail, importation and exportation of safe, quality and wholesome foods and feed. The Directorate is also responsible for the ranking of different types of food businesses as a basis for risk management. In the same vain, the Directorate carry’s out technical Audits of delegated competent bodies and person’s assigned responsibilities through MOUs.

Scientific Affairs Directorate

Is responsible for research related work, which includes the preparation of background information for scientific Food Safety Risk Assessment); Assessing competence of food testing laboratory and recommend use for official control of food and feed; Supporting development and provision of professional training in food safety for technical staff; Development of risk-based inspection procedures and protocols; providing secretariat support for the Scientific Committee; Management of the Food Safety Information System; Management of Authority website and public relations; design and implementation of residue monitoring programmes in relevant products; Linking the Authority with foreign Competent Authorities and International bodies; Risk communication, reception and dissemination of information on food safety risks and hazards.

Regulatory Affairs Directorate

Is responsible for developing legislative programmes to meet food safety needs, managing working groups drafting regulations, and providing the secretariat to the Board and the National Food Control Advisory Committee. It also manage legal relations with delegated authorities and prosecutions taken by the Authority.

Food Safety and Quality Authority of The Gambia is established by the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2011 under the Office of The President. It is the sole National Competent Authority with powers of delegation mandated to officially control the safety and quality of all foods (including water and beverages) and animal feed whether locally produced, imported or destined for export.
